RELIGION
Grade one Religion introduces God as Father and Creator and discusses the gift of Jesus. Also introduces God as the Holy Spirit, and God’s special friends, the saints. Lessons include such areas as the Mass, the sacraments and the Church as our family.
READING
Reading covers areas of comprehension, phonics/decoding, word study skills, sequencing, and summarizing.
Phonics skills include beginning and rhyming sound; letter/sound associations, short and long vowels, consonant blends and diagraphs; inflectional endings and contractions; use of suffixes and recognition of root words.
Comprehension skills include sequencing, main ideas, drawing conclusions, summarizing and recalling.
MATHEMATICS
Mathematics includes skills such as addition and subtraction of one and two digit numbers, time, money, customary and metric measurements, numeration to 100, graphs and tables. Covers an introduction to fractions and geometry through the use of manipulatives. Problem solving and the use of math in life situations are emphasized.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies includes lessons of self, family, home, school, basic needs and our country. Skills developed include reading and interpreting maps, globes, charts and graphs.
SCIENCE
Science includes concepts in earth and physical science such as plants, animals, ecology, air, water, weather, matter and energy. Topics are introduced through observation and experiments.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Language Arts includes writing, listening and speaking skills. The concept include listening, dramatization, group discussion and oral presentation. We learn to identify parts of speech and learn sentence structure including mechanics and punctuation.
SPELLING
Using an integrated language arts approach to help students acquire spelling proficiency through activities that build vocabulary, reinforce language skills, develop oral reading and language. List includes those words drawn from first grade curriculum, used most frequently and prepared list based on phonetic rules.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
To provide students with the opportunities to develop their potential physically, socially and mentally through basic ball handing skills and fitness and organizational games.
ART
Working with small motor skills in cutting, drawing and pasting. Introduction of color wheel and mixing of colors in both two and three dimensional projects. A variety of media is explored through the use of crayon, markers, and tempera paints.
LIBRARY
Children will learn how to use the library. They will be encouraged to pick out and read books that are appropriate for their ability. They will be aware of authors, titles, and Caldecott Award Books.
HANDWRITING
Handwriting is an integrated part of the whole language program and is correlated with all areas of learning. Consistent skill development is emphasized.
Each topic is taught through song, coloring, writing and pronunciation.
